Gaff Underwear Explained: Styles, Fit and How to Choose Yours

Give me the short version

Gaff underwear, also called gaff panties, is compression underwear with a front panel that holds a tuck flat and in place without tape. A good gaff fits snugly without pain, uses breathable fabric with a soft lining, and spreads its hold evenly so you can forget it's on. There's no single best gaff for everyone: Gigi Gaffs and High Waist Gaffs suit most first-timers, Queen Gaffs give a wide band and full hip coverage, Wide and Magic Gaffs hold firmest, and Victoria Gaffs and tucking thongs work under fitted outfits. Your first pair might not be the one, and most people end up with a small rotation for different days. Never size down for a flatter look, and stop if anything hurts. If you want the full picture, read on.

Before Gaff and Go existed, I tucked with industrial gaffer tape. There was nothing else I could get hold of, nobody to ask, and nothing made for a body like mine. It tore my skin, and I kept using it because I didn't know any better.

A gaff is the thing I wish I'd had back then. If you're shopping for your first one, or wondering why the one you own isn't working, the choice can feel overwhelming: lots of styles, lots of names, and very little plain explanation of what any of them do.

I'm Robyn Electra, founder of Gaff and Go. This guide covers what gaff underwear is, how it holds a tuck, what makes a good one, which style suits which body and day, and why there's no single best gaff for everyone. It's general guidance, not medical advice, so listen to your body and speak to a doctor if anything feels wrong.

WHAT IS GAFF UNDERWEAR?

Gaff underwear is compression underwear designed to hold a tuck in place and give you a smooth, flat front under your clothes. You'll hear it called a few things: gaff panties, tucking underwear, or, here in the UK, gaff knickers, which our guide to gaff knickers covers in more detail. They all mean the same thing.

Not every gaff does the same job. Some hold a full, firm tuck, and others smooth and shape without holding much at all. If you're weighing up how much hold you need, our breakdown of tucking versus non-tucking gaffs explains the difference.

HOW GAFF UNDERWEAR HOLDS A TUCK

Tucking means positioning your genitals back and out of sight so your front lies flat. A gaff does the holding. Firm, stretchy fabric and a reinforced front panel keep your tuck in place while you sit, walk and move through your day, without the tape I relied on for years.

The fit is what makes it work. If it's too loose, the tuck slips. If it's too tight, it hurts, and that's never a price worth paying. If you're new to tucking itself, our How to Tuck guide walks you through the steps, and our guide on how to wear a gaff shows how to put one on and get it sitting right.

WHO WEARS GAFF PANTIES?

Most people who wear gaff panties are trans women, non-binary people assigned male at birth, and anyone else who tucks. Drag performers wear them too, and Gaff and Go has become a favorite with many of the queens from RuPaul's Drag Race. Stage tucks are built for bright lights and bodysuits, and our post on how drag queens tuck explains what's different about them.

Some people wear a gaff every day. Others wear one only for certain outfits, events, or days when dysphoria feels louder. There's no right amount, and you get to decide what works for you.

WHAT MAKES GAFF UNDERWEAR GOOD

Fit comes first. A good gaff feels snug and secure without restricting how you move, and it should never cause pain. The pressure should spread evenly across the front and waist instead of digging in at one spot.

Fabric comes next. You'll wear a gaff against sensitive skin, often for hours, so breathable fabric and a soft lining matter. Our gaffs are lined with cotton, and several styles use anti-bacterial fabrics as well.

The real test is how you feel once it's on. A good gaff lets you forget about it. If you're constantly adjusting, bracing or checking yourself in shop windows, it's the wrong style or the wrong size for you, however popular it is.

WHICH GAFF STYLE SUITS YOU

We make several styles because one design can't meet every need. Gigi Gaffs have a slimmer waistband and a standard cut, which makes them an easy first gaff. High waist gaffs sit higher for a smoother line under clothes. Queen Gaffs have an extra-wide band and full hip coverage, which spreads the hold across a fuller figure.

For a firmer hold, Wide Gaffs have wider straps and firmer elastic, and Magic Gaffs have the firmest waistband in the range, with a Double Band option for extra hold. Victoria Gaffs have a higher, V-shaped waist and a structured fit for long days and nights out.

If you prefer a familiar shape, tucking briefs give you fuller coverage, and tucking thongs disappear under fitted dresses and leggings.

If you're ready to buy and want help matching a style to your day, our guide to which MTF gaff to buy goes through each situation and tells you what size to order. For a side-by-side look at every cut, read our guide to every gaff style.

IS THERE ONE BEST GAFF UNDERWEAR?

If you've been searching for the best gaff underwear, you're probably hoping for one simple answer. I understand that. Bodies are different, though, and so are days, and the gaff that feels right on one person can feel wrong on another.

Your first gaff might not be the one, and that doesn't mean you chose badly or that something's wrong with your body. It means you're learning. Some people find they want more coverage, some want something lighter, and many find they need different gaffs for different outfits.

That's why most people end up with a small rotation instead of one pair. You might reach for a firmer gaff on a long workday, something softer for a relaxed evening and a thong under a fitted dress. Having a few options means you can dress for the day you're having.

PAIN IS NEVER PART OF TUCKING

Whatever style you choose, one rule always applies: a gaff should support you, not hurt you. If it causes pain, numbness or broken skin, or makes it hard to move, take it off and give your body a break.

Never size down to get a flatter look. A gaff that's too small rolls, digs in and puts pressure where it shouldn't, and it won't give you a better tuck. If you're between sizes, take the larger one, and check the size chart on each product page before you order, because we can't take returns once a gaff has left us.

Some people use tucking tape for particular outfits or alongside a gaff. It can work, but it needs care to apply and remove, and our guide to tucking with tape safely explains how. For most everyday wear, a well-fitted gaff is the simpler and gentler choice.

HEAR IT FROM A CUSTOMER

I could tell you our gaffs are easy to wear all day, but I'd rather you heard it from someone who found us on their own. Here's one customer sharing what it felt like to try tucking for the first time in a Gaff and Go gaff.
