Soft vs Hard: The Different Types of Packers?
Give me the short version
Packers broadly split by firmness and function. Soft packers are the most popular for everyday wear: squishy, comfortable, and they make a natural, subtle bulge. Firmer packers hold their shape more and show more under clothing, so they suit people who want more presence or a specific function. In between sit stand-to-pee (STP) packers, which let you pee standing, and multi-function packers that do more than one job. For most people starting out, a soft packer in proper packing underwear is the easiest, most comfortable choice. But the right one depends entirely on what you want it to do.
If you've started looking at packers, you've probably noticed the choice is bigger than you expected. Soft ones, firm ones, ones that let you pee standing up, ones that claim to do everything. It's a lot, and most guides throw the words at you without explaining which is actually right for you.
I'm Robyn Electra, founder of Gaff and Go. Packing isn't part of my own experience as a trans woman, but it's daily life for so many people in our community, and choosing a first packer is one of the points people get stuck on most.
This guide breaks down the main types by how firm they are and what they do, so you can work out which one fits your life. With anything worn against the body, look for body-safe materials and stop using anything that irritates your skin.
WHAT "SOFT" AND "HARD" ACTUALLY MEAN
When people talk about soft versus hard packers, they're talking about firmness, and firmness changes both how a packer feels and how it looks.
A soft packer is squishy and flexible, made to imitate the feel of flaccid anatomy. It moves with you and sits naturally, which is why it's the everyday choice for most people. A firmer packer holds its shape more. That can be useful for certain functions or for people who want more definition, but it also means it shows more and needs more thought about clothing and positioning.
There isn't a "better" one. There's the one that matches what you need it to do on a given day.
SOFT PACKERS: THE EVERYDAY CHOICE
If you're new to packing, a soft packer is almost always the place to start.
Because it's squishy, it presses flat and creates a subtle, believable bulge rather than an obvious one. It's comfortable to wear for a full day, it's forgiving about clothing, and it's the least likely to catch you out by looking too prominent. Most people who pack daily are wearing a soft packer without anyone ever knowing.

The one thing a plain soft packer won't do is stay put on its own. It needs holding in place, which is where the right underwear comes in, and we'll come back to that.
FIRMER AND MULTI-FUNCTION PACKERS
Firmer packers hold their shape, and some are designed to do more than just pack.
Stand-to-pee packers, usually called STPs, have a built-in channel that lets you pee standing up. They take a little practice to position and use, but for a lot of people they're a genuine daily-life changer, especially for public bathrooms. Then there are multi-function packers, sometimes called pack-and-play, which are firmer and built to serve more than one purpose beyond everyday wear.
The trade-off with firmer packers is visibility. They show more under clothing than a soft packer does, so they pair best with structured fabrics and can look prominent under soft ones. If your main goal is a discreet everyday bulge, firmer isn't necessarily better. If you specifically want an STP function or more presence, this is the category to look at.
WHICH TYPE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Start from what you want it to do, not from what looks most impressive online.
If you want a comfortable, natural, everyday bulge and you're new to this, a soft packer is the answer, and it's where most people happily stay. If peeing standing up matters to you, look at an STP, and accept a small learning curve. If you want one packer to cover more than one situation, a multi-function option is worth considering, with the understanding that all-rounders involve compromise. Size and firmness also affect the look: smaller and softer reads as more subtle, larger and firmer needs more managing.
There's no rule that says you only get to own one. Plenty of people build up to a soft packer for daily wear and an STP for when they need it.
LOOKING AFTER YOUR PACKER
Whatever type you choose, a bit of basic care keeps it comfortable and lasting longer, and this is something most guides skip over.
Most packers are made from silicone, which is easy to look after. Wash it regularly with warm water and a mild, unscented soap, rinse it well and let it air dry fully before you store it. Keeping it clean matters for skin health as much as for the packer itself, since anything worn against the body all day needs to stay hygienic.
Store it somewhere clean and dry rather than loose in a bag or pocket, and keep it out of direct heat. If a packer ever starts to degrade, tear or feel tacky, stop using it and replace it. Body-safe silicone should feel smooth and intact, and a damaged one isn't worth the irritation.
THE PART THAT MATTERS WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE
Whichever type you land on, it's only as good as what holds it in place. A packer loose in ordinary underwear shifts and rides out of position no matter how well you chose it.
Our FTM packing underwear has a purpose-made pocket that keeps a soft packer or STP secure, so it stays where you put it through a normal day. Getting this right removes most of the frustration people blame on the packer itself.

CHOOSING WITH CONFIDENCE
The short answer to "soft or hard" is that soft suits most people most of the time, and firmer or multi-function packers earn their place when you want a specific function like an STP. Let what you need it to do lead the decision.
